What is a DC to DC charger?

The DC to DC battery charger(link) is functional to charge batteries using the power of your generator or vehicle's alternator. When you are driving, you can use the charger to charge your off-grid battery (as secondary battery or house battery) with your operating battery (as primary battery or starter battery) connected to the generator/alternator. To put it short, you can charge both batteries while driving. That is why the charger is commonly installed between the generator/alternator and both starter battery & the house battery on the system. In a regular RV system, the generator/alternator ensures stable power supply to the starter battery, and the charger helps to use excess DC power from generator to supply the house battery through the starer battery.

How to choose a battery charger?

Make sure it is a 12V battery system. The maximum charging current provided by the DC to DC battery charger does not exceed the current allowed by the house battery (as secondary battery).

If the input voltage is lower than the required output voltage, will it still charge?

LIAO 12V DC to DC charger works in supply voltage from 8V to 16V. The charger will charge battery during the range, while please be aware that the lower the supply voltage, the higher the amperage required to maintain the function.

Does it work with the latest smart alternators that fluctuate voltage as need for starter battery?

Yes, there is a terminal on our charger to connect an ignition wire. It will have a steady output regardless of the fluctuations in the input voltage.

How do I hook it up to charge my house batteries without hooking to my RV starter battery?

When you are driving, your RV alternator is charging your starter battery, and the alternator itself is also charging your house batteries along with the starter battery. To charge the house battery without connecting to the starer battery, you can install the charger then wire it into the starter battery. After the installation, you can place the third wire going to the ignition. By this method, it will work but only when the vehicle is running.

How should I choose how many amps of battery charger to buy?

The selection of the A rating for a battery charger depends on the capacity of your battery and charging speed requirements. Generally, the output current of the charger should be around 10% to 20% of the battery capacity, so that the charger can fully charge the battery in an appropriate amount of time.

For example, if your battery capacity is 100Ah, it is best to choose a charger with a rating of around 10A. If you need a faster charging speed, you can choose a slightly larger charger, but do not choose a charger that is too large, as it may place an excessive burden on the battery and affect its lifespan.
