The ebb and flow of lithium iron phosphate

Looking back on our country’s power battery market, it can be noticed that as early as 2009, the low-cost and extremely safe lithium iron phosphate batteries were the first to be used in the “Ten Cities and Thousand Vehicles” demonstration project launched by the Ministry of Science and Technology. application.

Subsequently, our country's new energy automobile industry, boosted by subsidy policies, experienced explosive growth, from less than 5,000 vehicles to 507,000 vehicles in 2016. The shipment of power batteries, the core component of new energy vehicles, has also increased substantially.

Data showed that in 2016, our country’s total power battery shipments were 28GWh, of which 72.5% were lithium iron phosphate batteries.

2016 is also a turning point. The subsidy policy changed that year and began to emphasize the mileage of vehicles. The higher the mileage, the higher the subsidy, so passenger cars have turned their attention to the NCM battery with stronger endurance.

In addition, due to the limited availability of the passenger car market and increased requirements for battery life in passenger cars, the glorious era of lithium iron phosphate has temporarily come to an end.

Until 2019, the new new energy vehicle subsidy policy was introduced, and the overall decline was more than 50%, and there was no higher requirement for vehicle mileage. As a result, lithium iron phosphate batteries began to return.

The future of lithium iron phosphate

In the new energy vehicle power battery market, judging from the data of power battery installed capacity in June this year, the installed capacity of NCM batteries is 3GWh, accounting for 63.8%, and the installed capacity of LFP batteries is 1.7GWh, accounting for 35.5. %. Although the supporting ratio of LFP batteries is far lower than that of NCM batteries from the data, the ratio of supporting passenger cars with LFP batteries increased from 4% to 9% in June.

In the commercial vehicle market, most of the supporting power batteries for passenger cars and special vehicles are LFP battery, which needless to say. In other words, LFP batteries have begun to be used in power batteries, and the trend is already established. With the foreseeable later sales of Tesla Model 3 and BYD Han EV, the market share of LFP batteries will only increase Not drop.

In the larger energy storage market, LFP battery is also more advantageous than NCM battery. Data showed that the capacity of my country's energy storage market will exceed 600 billion yuan in the next ten years. Even in 2020, the cumulative installed battery capacity of my country's energy storage market is expected to exceed 50GWh.
